Two ways a walk-in shower can be built

Most walk-in shower complaints come from the same source: bad waterproofing. Tile is a decorative surface — it's not the water barrier. Under the tile there is either a proper waterproofing membrane, or a prayer. We do it the first way, every time.

Curbed walk-in shower

A short tiled curb (typically 4 inches) separates the shower area from the bathroom floor. Traditional, contains water well, and works in almost any Columbus-area home — including slab-on-grade construction where recessing the shower floor would be expensive.

Curbless walk-in shower

The shower floor is level with the bathroom floor. Sleeker, easier to clean, and wheelchair/walker-accessible for aging in place. Requires the shower area to be recessed into the subfloor (in framed floors) or trenched (in slabs). We do both, and we'll tell you honestly if your specific house makes one meaningfully more expensive than the other.

What we install

• Waterproofing: sheet membrane or liquid-applied (Schluter Kerdi, Wedi, or equivalent) — never just a plastic pan liner with a mud bed.
• Shower pans: pre-formed, or custom mudded and sloped to a center or linear drain.
• Tile: 12x24, subway, herringbone, hexagon mosaic, large-format porcelain up to 32x32.
• Niches: single or stacked, tiled interior, LED-lit on request.
• Benches: floating, corner, full-length; tiled top with proper slope for drainage.
• Glass: frameless or semi-frameless, 3/8" or 1/2" tempered.
• Fixtures: rain heads, hand-helds, body sprays, thermostatic valves.

What drives the cost of a walk-in shower

A walk-in shower can be a straightforward curbed install or a full curbless, frameless-glass showpiece — so the price follows the choices you make. What moves it:

• Curbed vs. curbless. A curbless floor level with the bathroom is more work — it means recessing the subfloor or cutting the slab, plus a linear drain.
• The size of the shower and the tile. A larger footprint, full-height tile, or large-format and mosaic work all add labor and material.
• Glass. Framed, semi-frameless, and frameless enclosures are three different price points.
• Fixtures. A single showerhead versus a thermostatic valve with a rain head, hand-held, and body sprays.
• What's behind the old walls. Aging cast-iron drains or plumbing that has to move gets priced up front.

Typical timeline

A shower-only install (no other bathroom changes) is typically five to eight working days: two days demo and rough-in, two days waterproofing and cure, two days tile, one day grout and clean-up. Glass is measured after tile is done and takes about a week to fabricate.
